Gove District Hospital is a busy 30 bed general hospital
located in Nhulunbuy on the picturesque wilderness coastline of northeast
Arnhem Land. The hospital provides Medical, Surgical, Paediatric, Obstetric
and Accident and Emergency services to the mining town of Nhulunbuy and the
Aboriginal communities of northeast Arnhem Land.
Medical Officers have a dual hospital and district role and
are rostered to visit communities as well as providing a 24 hour service to
the District. This involves receiving community calls and organising
appropriate treatment or evacuation. Most Medical Officers employed have at
least 4 years postgraduate training, including experience in paediatrics and
emergency medicine.
There are several positions periodically available in GDH.
There is a great opportunity to use procedural obstetric, anaesthetic or
surgical skills independently but with some back-up from other experienced
colleagues.
Depending on individual skills, doctors are placed on the Aeromedical evacuation roster as the inflight doctor when patients need to
be flown either from their community to Gove District Hospital or, for more
severe cases, to Royal Darwin Hospital.
There is also an opportunity to experience working with the East Arnhem
indigenous people in the hospital as well as in their own traditional
environment.
There are shared positions available for those who wish to
work partly for a local indigenous health service and at the same time being
part of the hospital medical team maintaining skills in acute care.
Over many years we accommodated the needs of senior GP Registrars who
enjoyed their training time with us.
We take pride in caring for the special needs of our
Aboriginal patients, employing an Aboriginal Interpreter, Aboriginal Liaison
Officer and Aboriginal Health Worker
Our hospital staff work closely with local GPs and the
Miwatj Aboriginal Corporation to share resources and knowledge, ensuring we
provide the best possible care to the communities we serve. A representative
of the Miwatj sits on the Gove District Hospital Board.
In addition many of our hospital doctors also work with the
local mainstream general pactise, Endeavour Medical Centre.
